Recruiting and Promotion

What are the first steps in recruiting women of trans experience? First, reach out to agencies and clinics that have trans-specific services and or LGBT programing. Conduct outreach at meeting spaces, support groups, events and community venues that include the transgender community. We’ve also found that using all social media platforms will help with the recruiting process.

Social Media

If you or your agency are on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Messenger, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, or if you belong to other social media groups, search for "transgender specific support" in your city/state to connect to other types of online support for transgender and gender diverse folks.

Social Venues

Now, let’s find out where the local bars with trans and gender diverse performers are. The clubs, community spaces, organizations, support groups and gathering places, pageants, and ballroom houses. Larger communities have parts of the city that are more LGBT-populated, with stores or coffee shops that have a gender diverse clientele. Your local LGBT community center is also a good source for finding these folks and venues. In rural areas, transgender people may travel to larger cities to access social and supportive services and venues. They may be active members in their churches, schools, volunteer networks, or other types of local activism. Take a look at the sample media document in this section for more assistance.

Providers

Women of trans experience look for health care providers to gain access to hormones, surgery, and gender affirming care. Also, to pursue  legal name and gender change services. Many women of trans experience are also required to seek out mental health services for referrals to the affirming services that they need. As a result of this gatekeeping function, there are mental health providers in your local area who specialize in serving the transgender community. Some even host their own workshops, groups, and seminars to meet the needs of this population. Ask your provider or search trans specific services on the web.
